CASTLE STANISLAS
Seventeenth century castle that was a residence of royal pleasure, restored and became the seat of the municipality and various administrations
Château de Commercy was owned by Cardinal de Retz in the 17th century, by Count de Lorraine-Vaudémont in the early 18th century, then by Duke Stanislas Leszczyński, former King of Poland. The latter made it a prestigious residence for royal pleasures: Voltaire, Saint-Lambert and their rascals spent a sumptuous summer here in 1748. Destroyed by fire in 1944, it was restored in the 1960s-1970s and today houses the town hall, library and several administrative offices. Exhibitions and events are held here regularly.
