BAYONET TRENCH
Memorial built by architect André Ventre, "sacred ground where the dead stand guard". Seven unknown soldiers are buried here.
Sacred land where the dead stand guard. This memorial built by the architect A. Ventre (1920), was the subject of controversy. On 11 June 1916, the French, struggling against the slope of the Lady Ravine, were subjected to intensive shelling. On the 12th, the survivors surrendered, lining up their rifles in tribute to their fallen comrades. After the war, it is said that these soldiers were buried alive in their trench, the bayonets emerging from the ground being proof. Seven unknown soldiers lie here, signified by white crosses and rifles planted in the ground.
