WALLED SLOUGH
A massif providing a view of the Souvilles fort, as well as casemates, a cave-shelter for 300 men, an eclipse turret...
The fort of Souville was built in 1875-1877 and reinforced around 1888. In 14-18, it was part of the last line of fortifications before Verdun. Abandoned in 1916, it remained an observatory until the reorganisation of a defence line in July. The site shows the ensemble that had been developed around the fort: remains of the hospital, casemates, a cave-shelter for 300 men, an eclipse turret for two 155 mm guns, and communication channels.
