On February 21, 1916, the Germans attacked Haumont, an ancient village steeped in history. Despite the intensity of the enemy fire, the defenders held firm, displaying remarkable courage. After the war, the village was classified as a red zone, prohibiting its reconstruction due to the continuing risks. It is one of 9 French villages devastated during the First World War that have not been rebuilt. Every year, a commemorative mass honors the fallen soldiers.
