PC DU COLONEL DRIANT
A visit to discover Colonel Drian's HQ, a historic site in Haumont-près-Samogneux.
Colonel Driant, politician and officer, joined the front north of Verdun on February 16, 1916 with two battalions of Chasseurs. On February 21, the battle began at Bois des Caures. Despite their bravery, the French trenches were lost. Surrounded, Driant remained with his men. The bombardment resumed on February 22, and the fighters were overwhelmed. Driant, continuing to encourage his men, was killed in action. His sacrifice, though costly, delayed the German offensive and contributed to the defense of Verdun.
