ABBEY OF LACHALADE
Gothic style abbey church, classified as a historical monument, with stained glass windows in grisaille from the 14th century, the only specimens in Lorraine.
In 1120, 2 Benedictines left Sainte-Vanne-de-Verdun to settle in La Chalade. A church was consecrated in 1136. As the abbey grew richer, a new Gothic church was built in 1320-1340, in local gaize. Neglected after centuries of decline, the abbey church was listed as a historic monument in 1862. Recycled as a first-aid post in 14-18, it was relatively unscathed. In 1940, it was partially destroyed by bombing. Among its treasures: 14th-century stained glass windows in grisaille, the only examples in Lorraine, and the 15th-century rose window of Sainte-Vanne de Verdun.
