A fort at Lacroix-sur-Meuse in keeping with the motto of fortifications: bury yourself in the ruins rather than surrender

Supported by the forts of the Camp des Romains south of Génicourt in the north, Troyon saved the Verdun site after September 13, 1914. However, the fort was ordered to surrender unconditionally and respected the motto of the fortifications: to bury itself under the ruins rather than surrender. For five days, Troyon took the shock of the German artillery. On this sacrifice made by the entire garrison depended the integrity of Verdun, and consequently on the outcome of the conflict. Fallen into oblivion for more than 80 years, its preservation is now ensured by the association Ceux de Troyon, a handful of volunteers who run the place so that the new generations do not forget the sacrifice of their elders.

Voorbeeld van hoe vernietigend een 315mm artillerie aanval is van de Duitsers

Fascinating fortress with long corridors and dark rooms. Very friendly man at the entrance. Information leaflet was a bit concise, but this was no better at the other fortresses, so apparently it's normal.
Nice possibility to have a cold drink or a coffee at the entrance.
No toilets!
