Tour Valéran, which served as the cantonal prison of Ligny-en-Barrois in the and centuries, until 1840.
Standing 22.50 meters high and with a diameter of 8 meters at its base, the Valéran Tower, along with the Tour des Canons, framed the Porte des Moulins, the only means of communication from the "castle enclosure" to the outside world. Begun in the 12th century, it was completed during the reign of Valéran III, Count of Ligny from 1374 to 1415. Initially the centerpiece of the town's defensive system, it was converted into a cantonal prison in the 17th century, before being included on the first list of historic monuments in 1840.
