The tunnel is one of the longest in Europe and France's second longest river tunnel
This tunnel, one of the longest in Europe (4.8 km) and the second longest in France, was built on the canal linking the Marne and Rhine rivers, giving the commune access to the Seine basin. Five years in the making, between 1841 and 1846, it was one of the last navigable tunnels to be crossed by boats using the "touage" method, i.e. towed by electric traction cables laid at the bottom of the canal. Originally, barges were pulled through the tunnel to Demange-aux-Eaux by a steam-driven toueur. The crossing takes 1h30.
