MAIRIE-LAVOIR
This wash-house, a typically French concept, has been classified as a historical monument since 1998
In the 19th century, to counter epidemics, hygienists recommended the construction of washhouses in villages. It was the architect Théodore Oudet, designer of the Mauvages fountain, who undertook the construction of a town hall above the pre-existing washhouse in 1829. One can imagine the division of tasks at the time: the washerwomen working on the first floor and the men deciding on public affairs on the second floor. This typically French concept has been listed as a historic monument since 1998.
