CHÂTEAU DE MONTBRAS HOSTELLERIE DE L'ISLE EN BRAY
This castle on the road from Neufchâteau to Vaucouleurs is a magnificent example of Renaissance art in Lorraine
On the road from Neufchâteau to Vaucouleurs and the route to Santiago de Compostela, Château de Montbras is a magnificent example of Renaissance art in Lorraine. The present building was constructed between 1598 and 1611. Through the gate, you'll first see the large main courtyard, with its lawn and well-trimmed round box trees. All that remains are the east wing, the large west-facing façade, the four towers and part of the north wing. The main facade has five bays over two levels of living space and an attic level. The mullioned windows are separated by shell niches featuring statues of Greek divinities wrapped in stone drapery. Murder holes and machicolations are present, but are more decorative than defensive. Inside, one of the vaulted rooms features a series of 30 oil paintings depicting scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Another features a ceiling decorated with inlaid medallions. An astonishing fresco, the Dance des Topinamboucs, depicts 6 figures from the Brazilian Topinambucos, who caused a sensation when they came to France in 1613. The chapel and calvary are well worth a visit.
