The Collegiate Church of Saint-Germain was built around 620 by Balderic, a young monk and son of Sigebert, King of Austrasia, in charge of evangelizing the territory. It was badly damaged during the Hungarian invasion around 913, then during the Thirty Years' War, the Fronde and the Revolution. During the Great War, the bell tower was used as a landmark by the French army before being bombed by the Germans. All that remains today is the ruins of the portal and the side facade, to be discovered a few dozen metres from the Memorial.
