This monument was erected by the Americans in memory of the 28,000 young soldiers who fought to retake this hill.
The 234 steps of the 60-meter high tower are topped by an allegory of Liberty holding a flaming torch. President Roosevelt inaugurated the monument on August1, 1937, in an X-rayed speech. At the back, the ruins of the collegiate church of Montfaucon stand out. Destroyed and then occupied by the Germans, Montfaucon was retaken in September 1918 thanks to the actions of the5th U.S. Corps and the 505th French Regiment.
