Montmédy citadel, with a defensive system at the time directed against France, featuring 3 fortified gates in 1681
Since the 12th century, the hill overlooking Montmédy has always been a strategic area. In the 16th century, Charles-Quint reigned over the Holy Germanic Empire, of which Montmédy was a part. With his son Philippe II, they built most of the current fortifications (a defensive system at the time directed against France!). The citadel officially became French when the Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed in 1659. Vauban modernized it by raising its ramparts and digging ditches to further strengthen the defense. Three gates were fortified in 1681.
