Montmédy citadel, with a defensive system at the time directed against France, featuring 3 fortified gates in 1681

Since the 12th century, the hill overlooking Montmédy has always been a strategic area. In the 16th century, Charles-Quint reigned over the Holy Germanic Empire, of which Montmédy was a part. With his son Philippe II, they built most of the current fortifications (a defensive system at the time directed against France!). The citadel officially became French when the Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed in 1659. Vauban modernized it by raising its ramparts and digging ditches to further strengthen the defense. Three gates were fortified in 1681.

très intéressante et imposante citadelle avec un superbe point de vue sur cette petite ville et la plaine environnante. vous pourrez facilement y passer 2 ou 3 heures avec la balade sur les chemins le long des remparts.
The site is interesting and rich in historic buildings. Activities are regularly organised on site, ramparts or: tours with torches of the ditches, ramparts and underground, sound and light, gourmet promenade, medieval festivals, exhibitions of artists, etc. But the Church is also interesting historically. Several old buildings are well renovated, others not... Unfortunately, in this moment, many work of demolition denature the beauty of the village.
