A destroyed village, with a chapel-shelter and a war memorial, silent reminders of the former inhabitants' glorious past.
Ornes, a village with a rich past, has enjoyed a long history of prosperity, with a population reaching 1,316 in 1851. Situated at the bottom of a valley, it was an important settlement from Merovingian times, home to a feudal castle at the heart of struggles between lords and bishops. In 1916, its inhabitants were forced into exodus by the fighting, condemned to abandon their land. Despite their efforts to rebuild, post-war devastation proved inescapable. Only a chapel shelter and a war memorial remain, silent reminders of this past.
