BENEDICTINE ABBEY
A remarkable abbey houses a rich Benedictine library, a museum of sacred art and a tourist office in Saint-Mihiel.
The Benedictine abbey was founded in 709 by Wulfoad, a powerful lord of the Austrasian court, and dedicated to Saint Michael. Today owned by the town, this remarkable architectural ensemble has been used for several purposes: as a court and prison during the French Revolution, and as a secondary school, high school and gendarmerie during the 20th century. The abbey is now a cultural complex, a venue for exhibitions and workshops. It also houses the Benedictine library, the Museum of Sacred Art and the tourist office.
