THE ROCKS
Legend is that, in a distant time, where Saint-Mihiel was called Godinecourt, seven nasty fées flooded the city beneath the waters, by rushing into the river seven huge rocks taken from nearby quarries. Prince Saint-Michel, passing the head of his heavenly militias, dismissed the seven fées, who abandoned on the shore the rocks that one can admire today. By recognition, the inhabitants gave the hamlet the name of Saint-Michel, which became by Saint-Mihiel deformation. The "Ladies of Meuse", seven huge blocks of metre high limestone, dominate the city. The first rock of the calvary was pierced by a cave in the th century, to receive a Christ at the Tomb carved by Mangeot. The rocks appear on the arms of the city and are the pride of the sammiellois, whose motto is "donec moveanture", which means "until they move". It is a popular place of stroll, with a view overlooking the valley of the Meuse. It is also an exceptional site in the Meuse for the practice of climbing.
