SAINT DAGOBERT'S CRYPT
Chapelle Saint-Dagobert, which includes a small permanent exhibition dedicated to the Merovingians in Stenay.
Stenay was a Merovingian royal city. It is known that the last king of the dynasty, Dagobert II, was assassinated in the vicinity, in the Woëvre forest (679). His body was buried after beatification (872) in the Saint-Dagobert chapel, which has now disappeared. Archaeological excavations have brought to light the primitive gothic portal (13th century) of the holy place, which has now been moved to this cellar on Place Poincaré. The visit includes a small permanent exhibition dedicated to the Merovingians as well as a reproduction of the mysterious stone of Stenay.
