TOUR LOUIS XVI
Tour to a history that you can relive through routes composed of explanatory panels placed at important places.
On June 22, 1791, Louis XVI and his family were arrested in Varennes as they left the Auberge du Bras d'Or in front of the church to flee to Montmédy. Two years later, in 1793, the Clock Tower, known as the Louis XVI Tower, was built near the scene of the arrest, in place of the church choir. During the First World War, the city was completely destroyed, a fire destroyed the belfry. The war ended, it was not until 1923 that the Louis XVI Tower was rebuilt. If today there are no buildings left that bear witness to the arrest of Louis XVI, you can relive this period of history through a route composed of explanatory panels placed at the places that marked the event.
