CASTLE DOOR
Porte Châtel, built in the 12th century and classified as a historical monument, is the highest point of Verdun, to be discovered.
Built in the 12th century, it is the only surviving and probably the oldest of the three gates of the fortification that surrounded the upper town in the Middle Ages. It is the highest point of Verdun (226 m). It was completed in the 14th century with a machicolation structure. From there, it will not cease being modified until its final form, wanted by Sebastien Le Prestre, Marquis of Vauban in the 17th century. After the First World War, the Châtel gate was cleared on the right to allow the passage of vehicles. It is classified as a historical monument.
