Aumetz Iron Mine Museum, a site that offers to discover the history of shaft mining

The Aumetz iron mine museum is a real industrial temple, complementary to the Neufchef iron mine museum, which together form the Ecomuseum of the iron mines of Lorraine. The site of Aumetz offers you to discover the history of the exploitation of the mines in real galleries. The Bassompierre mine was exploited from 1900 to 1983. At that time, the mine was home to miners who were called "yellow faces" (unlike the "black faces" for coal), who were subjected to harsh working conditions. The exhibition rooms are therefore thematic, related to mining activities: the extraction machine room, the compressor room, the forges and the carpentry. The visit also deals with the military aspect of the iron and steel industry, with in particular the presentation of a flying bomb V dating from the Second World War. Finally, climbing the 35-meter-high headframe platform offers a 360° panorama of the Pays-Haut: mining towns, the iron church of Crusnes, and the fortifications of the Maginot Line. A new feature is the access to the staff boarding platform at the base of the headframe. Where the miners wait to take the cage and go down into the mine, you will relive the boarding maneuvers. This new space, which was forgotten for 30 years, is decorated with a unique fresco on the miners. A projection of an archive film on the shaft mines will end the visit.
