A citadel in Bitche, with a museum dedicated to the weapons and uniforms worn by soldiers in 1870.
The Citadel of Bitche is part of the network of major sites in Moselle. Through its underground complex, an audiovisual museum tour immerses visitors in the history of the fortress. Majestic and imposing, the citadel of Bitche, built according to Vauban's plans, has dominated the town since the end of the 17th century. It is the first thing you see when you approach Bitche. It stands proudly on its pink sandstone rock and the town has literally wrapped itself around it. One can imagine the importance of the building when it still had a defensive function. The underground tunnels are just as impressive, a real city under the ground with casemated shelters, a stable, a hospital, a kitchen and a bakery, all ingeniously carved into the rock. A tour has been set up to relive the heroic resistance of the besieged fortress during the 1870 war. Equipped with headphones, you begin your visit in the bowels of the citadel by meeting Mondel, a soldier journalist. He will accompany you from room to room to meet the various protagonists of this period. In the restored chapel, a Plan-Relief museum has been set up, as well as a historical museum and a heritage and architectural trail. Numerous activities are offered throughout the season. Don't hesitate to check the website regularly for more information! The citadel of Bitche is classified as a historical monument since 1979.
