The airfield was created in 1911 for pilot training and military observation of the French/German border zone on the eve of the First World War. Subsequently, civilian aeronautical activities were developed. The Sarrebourg-Buhl airfield is home to the Sarrebourg regional flying club, founded in 1947 by Henri Metz, a locksmith born in Sarrebourg in 1892, who learned to fly during his military service in the German army. Today, it is a dynamic intercommunal airfield and the last airfield in Moselle open to public air traffic. It has two runways running south-north, one asphalt runway 740 m long and 20 m wide, and one grass runway 770 m long and 80 m wide.
