CASTLE OF SAINT SIXTUS
12th century castle offering guided tours, events and activities, egg hunt, labyrinth, night tours
On the banks of the Nied River, this medieval complex bears little resemblance to the original fortified castle. Built in the Middle Ages, in the 12th century by Lord Wirich de Valcourt, the Saint-Sixte castle was transformed into a residence of pleasure in the 16th century, before undergoing new changes in the 18th century. Saved from ruin, the Gehl family acquired the castle and its lands in 1986 and undertook a vast project of restoration of the courtyard, the rooms and the facades. Classified as a historical monument in 1991, this building was designed according to an oval plan, proof of its originality. If the whole is built in pink sandstone, some parts are made with a local stone evoking the Jasper marble.
The six buildings are arranged around an inner courtyard which can only be accessed through a fortified porch. Three beautiful Renaissance-style corner turrets house the staircases that lead to the different buildings. Inside, remarkable woodwork (parquet floor and beamed ceilings). As for the knights' and justice rooms, they illustrate the art of the Renaissance in Lorraine. The castle is also meant to be fun and entertaining! Discover the many events that take place throughout the year. Guided tours and many events and activities are offered for young and old! Egg hunt in April, escape game on reservation from April to October, giant corn maze, mini-golf, night visits, barefoot path, pedal boat on the Nied... enough to brighten up the weekend!
