ST. STEPHEN'S COLLEGE
Built in the 1200 th century, Saint-Etienne Collegiate was completely rebuilt by the year. It is the embodiment of the passage from Romanesque to Gothic art: Its arches are sometimes in full hanger (in the nave and lower sides), sometimes broken (the transept and the bedside). The central bell tower dates back to the th century. In 1824, it was surmounted by a shallow bulb for the region, replacing the old roof with four parts. There is a small side door surmounted by a th century eardrum dating from the Roman era. The iconography reveals a last Judgment with a Christ-Judge in the centre represented in a stylized manner. The portal reveals a scene of the Resurrection. The interior is Gothic style, as evidenced by the croisée voûtes of warheads. To be seen in the college: the stained glass windows, the chœur of the choir, the cross to the colorful characters, the great Christ of wood attributed to Ligier Richier (th century) and the monumental organ. You will notice that, overall, all the capitals do not resemble each other. Foliage, vegetable web and flower motifs for some, grotesque figures, sometimes human, sometimes animals for others…
Open your eye. Close to the organ gallery, there is a strange big top, saying the devil!
