CHAPEL OF NOTRE-DAME AND SAINT-THIÉBAULT PRIORY
Set back in the heights of the village, on the road to Chambley, the Saint-Thiébault chapel can be reached via a beautiful alley of country trees. It was originally founded by the monks of Gorze Abbey in 1492. Every year before the arrival of the Second World War, the place was the object of an important regional pilgrimage. Abandoned in 1940, it was restored around 1982: having become private property since 1975, a French Orthodox community is restoring this former hermitage dedicated to Saint Thibaud de Provins. Inside, the walls are entirely covered with icons and polychrome frescoes made in the 20th century. The whole in the respect of two ancient techniques; "a fresco" and "a secco". The nave is the work of a certain Dobrynin, a famous Russian painter of the Moscow School. The bright colours (blue, red) are enhanced by golden elements.
Other treasures of sacred art deserve to be mentioned: the altar signed by the sculptor Joseph Kriegel from Lorraine and the pulpit made by the companion Matthieu Bertaud. Near the chapel, the Bethany centre is open to pilgrims wishing to stay there for a retreat or to follow seminars on Orthodox spirituality. Chestnut trees and fruit gardens make up the pretty park surrounding the chapel. This place alone, which unites the East and the West, brings peace and serenity...
