GRUNDVILLER'S REBIRTH ORDEAL
While the territory of the surrounding Sarreguemines abounds with Wayside, one of the most majestic in Lorraine is undoubtedly Grundviller's calvary. Its presumed dating would be 1515. From an iconic point of view, the upper part represents Christ in Cross surrounded by the apostle John, the Virgin Mary and, at his feet, Marie-Madeleine. The lower part of the calvary reveals the episodes of Christ's passion, through eight carved panels. There is also a death head (symbol of the vanity of human life and time passing…) supporting an empty medallion surmounted by a crown. The reverse represents Christ in his tomb alone, which can save us from death.
During the Second World War, the monument was dismantled (in a will to save) and transferred to Cognac, before returning to the location we know today (behind the church near the cave of Lourdes). Classified Historic monument in 1985, this Renaissance masterpiece was restored in 2013.
