THE LACATAYE DUNGEON
A monumental crenellated tower built of shell stone in Mont-de-Marsan
A symbol of the town, it was built in the 13th century to protect the southeast side. It was a stronghold house, an observation post on the Midou, one of Mont-de-Marsan's two rivers. The Lacataye keep is a monumental crenellated tower built of shell stone. In 1860, the mayor of Mont-de-Marsan, Antoine Lacaze, restored it and donated it to the town to house a garrison. Since 1962, it has housed the Musée Despiau-Wlérick (under construction until the end of 2024), devoted to collections of figurative sculpture from the first half of the 20th century.
