Museum retracing the history of salt exploitation through production techniques, from prehistory to the present day

Located in the Porte de France, a vestige of Vauban's fortifications, the Musée Départemental du Sel in Marsal retraces the history of salt production through the techniques of production, from prehistory to the present day.

White gold! The new museography of this site invites visitors to immerse themselves in the history of salt production through five thematic and chronological rooms, from the Iron Age to the 18th century, via the Roman period, the Middle Ages and the reign of Louis XIV.

With screens, 3D animations, and digital tours on tablets and smartphones, the 3.0 era is coming to the museum! Busts of famous people come to life on tablets, and virtual reality headsets offer visitors a unique immersive adventure into the heart of the salt extraction process and other points of interest. Finally, after walking through the "corridor of time", visitors can also enjoy a virtual reality experience. This brings human remains (skeletons dating back to 350-300 BC) to life.

At the foot of the ramparts, a path invites visitors to discover the "salt pond". Also worth seeing are the remains of military architecture (Vauban's fortifications, Arsenal) as well as the 12th century collegiate church of Saint-Léger, a major example of religious architecture.
