THE STONE OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES
This border point, also known as the «Menhir de Breitenstein», is located near Meisenthal, in the heart of the forest. It is possible to access it on foot or by bike, and it lies exactly at a crossroads between Goetzenbruck and Quimper-sur-Wingen. It is a man-made monolith, always keeping its original state and primitive meaning secret, history still hesitates between a sacrificial stone and the grave of a pagan general. Clearly, the Stone of the Twelve Apostles arose as a red sandstone block with a height of 4,50 m. This stone marked the boundary between the territories of Gaulle and Belgium and that of the Triboques (Germania) in Roman times. In the th century, this remnant separated the duchy of Lorraine from the county of Hanau. Sculptures were probably added in the th century. They reproduce on four lines the names of the twelve apostles, all in a Germanic spelling. Nowadays, it points to the boundary between the Moselle and the Lower Rhine and thus between Lorraine and Alsace.
