LES ARÈNES
There are no arenas on the horizon, as you might find in the south of France, for example. Yet this 16,000 m² space, built at the end of the Parc de la Seille by architect Paul Chemetov, can host sporting, musical and artistic events. With a capacity of 4,300, the Arènes offers a vast choice of shows for the general public every year. From comedians (Éric Antoine, Gad Elmaleh...) to singers (Black M, Francis Cabrel...), France's greatest artists have made a habit of stopping off at the Metz venue. The Palais omnisports is also home to the Metz Handball women's team (19-time French champions) throughout the season and, in September, to the Moselle Open and its tennis stars. Easily accessible and ideally located, the Arenas energize the new Amphitheatre district, despite the notorious absence of free parking in the area. As you may have guessed, the name of this district is no coincidence: this was the site of the largest amphitheatre built in Roman Gaul in the 1st century. In ancient times, it held 25,000 spectators..
