ARCHIVES MUNICIPALES
Witness to history and a true memory of Metz, the Municipal Archives preserve an extraordinary heritage. From the Middle Ages to the present day, everything is accessible in this paradise of local information! In fact, the mayor's mission with these archives is to collect public records from municipal departments, to promote the city's heritage, and to preserve (classified) documents through various cultural and/or educational events. Preserved in the city's two former reservoirs, these documents cover different aspects of Messinian society: political, administrative, social, economic, religious and cultural. The reading room (no loans) gives everyone access to most of this information. The Archives de Metz is also endeavoring to make the wealth of its holdings accessible to the general public via a website: the City of Metz provides a comprehensive and precise search engine. Looking for a document on a specific period, a plan of an old building or a photograph of a 19th-century personality? Do a search before you go to the archives, and you'll get the right reference straight away.
