THE OLD PARLIAMENT AND BISHOP'S PALACE
Originally, the building of Parliament and the Episcopal Palace was entrusted to the architect Jacques-François Blondel during the second half of the eighteenth century. Thus surrounded by the Cathedral Square of two symmetrical buildings, the great classic portal of the Cathedral could be highlighted. The latter, built in 1764, was destroyed and replaced in 1903 by another Gothic style. This same period sees the construction of the City Hall and Opera Theater in a style called «Enlightenment». The East Block was destined for the Parliament of Metz and that of the west at the Episcopal Palace. These two U-shaped palaces had to be equipped with a monumental portal. When the revolution arrived, none of them was finished. Only the facade of Parliament on the Square of Arms was completed, side of the Cathedral. The monumental portal project was replaced by beautiful houses built in 1824 and whose facades are adorned with bas-reliefs symbolizing the arts and sciences: painting, architecture, music, commerce and astronomy…
After the Revolution, the architect Jaunez cut short to work with a roof on the ground floor. We thought about installing the Palace of Justice, but in 1830, this beautiful building became… the covered market. Today, it's always the meeting of gourmets! There are, of course, local and regional specialties, but also many different products. In summer, beautiful terraces are available to take advantage of the place in peace!
