This formal garden finds its natural extension in the English gardens bordering the lake below.

Whether on the city side or the water side, the Esplanade gardens are a must. When the weather is fine, people like to sit on a bench or a low stone wall to enjoy a cool drink, meet up with friends or simply stroll around. A fountain adorns its center and many pranksters have fun there. In this area, behind the Palais de Justice, there are two beautiful 18th century stone vases. Artists of the Metz School decorated the garden with statues. We owe to the Metz sculptor Charles-Pêtre, the impressive statue of Marshal Ney, a masterly work of art standing guard, rifle in hand. In 1869, the same artist created the Source, a graceful nymph pouring water from a jar into a basin. Finally, let us not forget to mention Christophe Fratin, a pupil of the painter Géricault. His flagship work, a fiery Arabian thoroughbred horse, stands opposite the Palais de Justice. Adjacent to the shopping centre, this garden with its French-style statues finds its natural extension in the English-style gardens bordering the lake below.
