Square in the heart of downtown Metz, with a remarkable column and many terraces, a place where it is good to live.
"The place to be " in the heart of downtown. It is a must for those who like to have an aperitif with friends, whether you are in casual mode or well-dressed! People meet and greet each other, have a drink on one of the many café terraces and eat when the sun shines. In summer, people come to stroll around, ice cream in hand... In every respect, it is a place to be appreciated, as much for its activity as for its history. Located at the intersection of Serpenoise, Taison and Fournirue streets, the square probably covers part of the ancient forum of the Gallo-Roman villa. Its name comes from the parish church Saint-Jacques which bordered it. It was built in 1137 before being demolished at the end of the 16th century. From 1832 to 1908, the square was occupied by a fresh vegetable and flower market, a successful covered market. It became the receptacle of a multitude of architectural styles, from neo-Renaissance to Art Nouveau. In the middle of the square stands a column surmounted by a statue of the Virgin carrying the baby Jesus. The city's bishop had vowed to erect a statue of the Virgin Mary in this square if the city was spared the fighting of the First World War. This was done in 1924. Since then, it is celebrated every Assumption Day, on August 15th. During the Christmas holidays, one of the many markets of the city can be found there, including a stand dedicated to decorations: it's magical! As you can see, in summer and in winter, it's a great place to live on the Place Saint-Jacques!
