STEINMETZ BARRACKS
Instead of barracks, it is now a set of shops, restaurants, laboratories and various firms that define the boulevard de Tries.
As part of the German Empire, the military staff continued the fortification work begun under the Second Empire between 1875 and 1912. Many barracks were built to shelter a garrison that was up to 20,000 men. In yellow, they bear the visual and architectural signature of Metz, being built with Jaumont stone. Today, the city of Metz has embarked on a vast plan to rehabilitate these buildings, transformed into shops and standing houses: It was time because the site was abandoned for many years. The military character of the buildings has been glimpsed by a lot of windows. The verrière built at the end of the building on the city center gives it a touch of lightness. The whole set has been moderated gradually, depending on the installation of the shops. Although controversial enough, even today, the renovation of the boulevard from a new dynamic to the city conserving authentic architecture.
