Remarkable tunnel at Niderviller, built in 1849 to allow barge navigation on the Marne-Rhine canal.
For a long time, the Marne-Rhine canal was the center of intense life in Niderviller. Economic activity revolved around river transport. The canal was used to transport production from the tile works and quarries. There was even a shipyard in Niderviller. Today, Niderviller remains a marina with the possibility of renting houseboats. Today, it's the yachtsmen who navigate the canal. More than 8,000 pleasure boats pass through Niderviller every year!
The construction of this canal was a technical feat, with the creation of ponds to feed it, the digging of locks and the development of the towpath, to allow the passage of the horses that pulled the barges. The passage through Niderviller required the digging of a tunnel. Like the Arzviller tunnel, the Niderviller tunnel, 475 m long, is a remarkable structure built in 1849. These tunnels have recently been modernized by Voies Navigables de France (VNF), with particular emphasis on interior lighting. From an ecological point of view, the tunnels offer ideal conditions for bats to overwinter when pleasure boats stop sailing. During the renovation work, VNF installed bat shelters in front of the tunnel heads. To ensure the well-being of these nocturnal animals, shelters were also built inside the tunnels, and new lighting was installed. The 2 adjoining tunnels are 2.7 km in length.
