MEDIEVAL GARDEN
Medieval and historical city, surrounded by a 700 meters long wall
Well adapted to the limited space of the site, this garden spreads out in length and responds, in its simplicity, to what the historian can expect from such an evocation. The garden opens with a space reserved for the simple plants, which were essential at a time when the apothecary found most of his merchandise in the herbularium. The garden of a village labeled as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" is necessarily a garden like no other! The medieval garden of Rodemack is located along the ramparts and along the ruisseau des Oiseaux. Created in 1990, it was designed so that its cultivated areas form geometric drawings according to the plans of the Middle Ages evoking the "hortus conclusus" of the castles. Delimited by a low wall, it is divided into four distinct areas: medicinal plants (wormwood, thyme, verbena, burnet, borage...), condiment and aromatic plants (tarragon, lavender, savory), vegetables and food plants (sorrel, mint...), and finally flowers and ornamental plants (cornflowers, forget-me-nots, lupins, daisy queens, as well as the rose, the quintessential medieval flower). There are also pruned trees or shrubs planted in certain places, such as the blackcurrant, the medlar tree, the cherry tree... Regularly enriched and maintained, this medieval garden can be visited freely and is pampered by the Association of Friends of the Old Stones for the Safeguarding of Rodemack. In June, the flowering of the old roses reaches its plenitude, making this space a true pleasure garden.
