CISTERCIAN ABBEY OF VILLERS-BETTNACH
Through its splitting, the Cistercian Abbey of Villers-Bettnach arises as a certain pedagogical reference to what this type of place should be in the th century. But in reality the story of the abbey stands from 1133 to 1792! Cistercian monks came to settle from the th century in Saint-Hubert, today kilometres northeast of Metz. This abbey was then destroyed in part by the wars of the th and th centuries and then completed by the Revolution. The old cloister next to the main abbey was surrounded by two mills (one, the other saying old). Nowadays, the site, wooded, houses a pond (water reserve). The visit can begin at the Coislin Portal level. In a classical style, it was erected in 1729 by the Bishop of Metz in the context of the consecration of the new abbey. Today, it is still beautifully preserved. Further, there are two chapels: that of the Humble and another dedicated to Saint Catherine dating from the th century. Originally, it was the first oratory of the monks. Today, the place remains private. Thanks to the Association des Amis des Sites de Saint-Hubert, it is possible to visit certain parts of the abbey, reservations are made on registration. Finally, do not forget the annual appointment (in mid-September): with the feast of bread, honour to craft and tradition, everything in a friendly atmosphere, within a place loaded with history.
