THE SOURCE OF CHARLEMAGNE
When you turn your back to the chapel Notre-Dame de Rabas, you can reach the source either by road (10 minutes walk) or by the forest road along the same road. This ancient legend, strongly rooted in popular imagination, dates back to the ninth century. The story says that Charlemagne, passing through the city of Thionville, went hunting with his men and dogs in the region. With a beautiful and warm summer day, they continued towards Vigy and Saint-Hubert. But over the hours, the heat was so overwhelming, that the emperor himself couldn't quash his thirst. It was then that he invoked the Virgin in the middle of the forest, promising him to build a chapel if she made water appear. Immediately, prayer became reality. In his horse's hooves, a source of pure water… Even today, visitors and pilgrims walk to the mythical source of the emperor, who always flows in the heart of the forest. A tradition that continues!
