Transversal inclined plane of Saint-Louis-Arzviller, a boat elevator which allows the crossing of the Vosges, to discover.
The Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane is a boat lift which is part of the Marne-Rhine canal and allows the crossing of the Vosges. Unique in Europe, this 41° slope on the hillside is the only "transverse type boat lift". Its neighbours, located on the Russian Ienissei and on the Charleroi-Brussels canal, are designed according to a longitudinal type. The Arzviller inclined plane does the work of 17 locks over nearly 4 km! A great saving of water in favour of the environment and it is nowadays a constant battle. In just 5 minutes, the boats climb a 45-metre difference in height. The building is amazing. It is hard to imagine the size of the machinery that drives it all! In a few figures: the ferry, which has the dimensions of a traditional lock, i.e. 41.50 m by 5.50 m, weighs 900 tons. Built between 1964 and 1969, this navigation axis is used by about 10,000 boats every year. The most visited technical structure in Lorraine, the site welcomes no less than 140,000 visitors each year.
The tourist society of the Inclined Plan is an association which manages the visits of the Inclined Plan by offering to the visitors many tourist services to discover the installations of the work and its surroundings. On the programme for children and adults, tours and commented circuits, in mini-cruises and launches.
