LA CHAPELLE DES VERRIERS
Chapel dedicated to glassmakers, with Renaissance portal façade and rococo rocaille nave, in Saint-Quirin.
As early as the 16th century, itinerant glassmakers set up shop in the forests around Saint-Quirin. After the Thirty Years' War, the monks revived the glass industry. In 1739, a major glassworks was built in Lettenbach, a hamlet of Saint-Quirin. Elevated to the rank of royal factory, it remained in operation until the 19th century. The Baroque-style church, built in 1756 for the workers and their families, is now a listed building and well worth a visit. Its roof and chevet are shingled. The steeple is dominated by two bulbs covered with slate scales. The portal, with its pilasters and entablature in Vosges pink sandstone, is topped by an arched pediment and a Latin cross at the base of which is inscribed the date "1756". Inside, the flat-vaulted nave and chevet are pierced by round-arched windows adorned with stained glass.
