STATION SQUARE
The Place de la Gare is a strategic point in the town, a lively place for people to pass through, with the decorated fountain at its center.
The old station stood at the entrance to the town. The Great War delayed the progress of the work begun in 1909, and the new station was completed in 1923. With its columns and symmetrical façade, the building is in the neo-classical style. The19th-century building faces the square, and is adorned with a wrought-iron balcony along its entire length. The façade alternates between white and pink Vosges sandstone. A brasserie occupies the first floor. On the forecourt, a modern sculpture adorns the fountain. It's the sculpted hand, the work of Jean Cardot, a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and the Institut de France, Grand Prix de Rome sculptor and creator of the bust of Winston Churchill that can be seen on the Champs-Élysées. A symbol of fraternity, equality and sharing, this open hand welcomes travelers, passers-by and local residents accustomed to its comforting presence... It stands out for its dynamic twist and enlivens the square with a play of water.
