THE EARTHENWARE MUSEUM AND THE WINTER GARDEN
The art of ceramics in the 19th century experienced a major flourishing.
Located a few steps from the station, the former residence of Paul de Geiger, director of the Faïenceries de Sarreguemines between 1871 and 1914, has become the historical museum of faience. On the agenda? Works of porcelain, fine stoneware and terracotta, as well as several rooms dedicated to Gallo-Roman archaeology. The art of ceramics, which flourished in the 19th century. Hygienic and decorative, it covers the fronts of brasseries, restaurants, shops, thermal baths... From 1880, the Sarreguemines manufactory designed its frescoes in its Parisian workshops, so we find ceramic panels from the city of Avray to the Trianon of Versailles. The museum also houses a sumptuous winter garden classified as a Historic Monument and built as an extension of the apartments between 1880 and 1882. Richly decorated by Schuller, it is entirely composed of earthenware tiles and houses a monumental fountain in its centre. Two side panels represent views of Sarreguemines as well as two female characters, allegories of earth and fire. Many activities are available for young and old throughout the year.
