ROBERT SCHUMAN'S HOUSE
Robert Schuman's house welcomes visitors to discover the world of a typical home in a charming winegrowing village
After the two world wars, European countries were more torn apart than ever. However, politicians soon began to believe in the future, and in the possibility of establishing a lasting peace. To this end, Robert Schuman delivered a landmark speech in 1950, based on two principles: the creation of a new entity to jointly manage the coal and steel resources of France and Germany, and the laying of the foundation stone for a European federation. On May 9, 1950, at a press conference in the Salon de l'Horloge at the Quai d'Orsay, Robert Schuman presented the points of the future European Coal and Steel Community. This bold act would later make him, by popular acclaim, one of Europe's founding fathers. The House of Robert Schuman welcomes you and lets you discover its intimacy as well as the world of a typical residence in a charming winegrowing village. Since 2018, an app has enabled you to take an immersive digital tour using a smartphone or tablet. Dedicated housekeeper Marie Kelle accompanies you throughout your visit, enlivening it with stories and anecdotes that demonstrate the humility and grandeur of this figure of Franco-German reconciliation. Outside, marvel at the gardens: the ornamental garden, known as the "historic garden", the kitchen garden, the meadow and the "Jardin des Plantes de chez nous" offer a display of beauty and serenity...
