CISTERCIAN ABBEY
Old abbey in Sturzelbronn with a famous perpetual stone calendar which was used to determine the date of Easter
Founded by Saint Bernard de Clairvaux in 1135, the former abbey was the burial place of several dukes of Lorraine. The large portal, the pillory, the coat-of-arms of one of the 45 abbots, the tympanum of the former abbey church, the grotto-cellier and the monks' ice-house still remain. Most surprising of all is the famous stone perpetual calendar, the only one of its kind in France, which was used to determine the date of Easter. A statue of Saint Bernard de Clairvaux was erected in 1935, to mark the abbey's 800th anniversary.
