SAINT-MAXIMIN CHURCH
Built from 1756 to 1760, Saint-Maximin Church faces southwest because of the rampart of the old walled city. Its two tower towers, surmounted by observation platforms, testify to its status as a fortified church. A massive, imposing church, typical of the architecture of the Lorraine 18th century sanctuaries, located next to the current town hall. It was largely damaged during the siege of 1870, then rebuilt in 1883. The interior is worth a visit: a large canopy dating from 1743 occupies the choir of the church; a 1704 organ, with its baroque buffet and 3,500 pipes, gives it a majestic feel. Since 1984, the building has been classified as a historic monument. Rehabilitation work began in 2010 to restore the choir, transept and paintings, the last phase concerning the other 3 bays and the nave gallery will be completed in 2018. To discover!
