HOMELAND ALTAR
Altar of the Fatherland of Thionville, classified as a historical monument, being the last monument of its kind that deserves a look
In every town in France an altar of the Fatherland was built, intended to "concentrate patriotic fervour" during the Revolution. Built on September 22, 1796, the Altar of the Fatherland in Thionville is the last monument of its kind in our country. A true patriotic symbol, it was the place where military victories and civil ceremonies were celebrated. In 1810, this obelisk was hidden and protected in the Saint-François cemetery. The obelisk, which is steeped in the history of the city, was classified as a historical monument on September 15, 1995. It is worth a look!
