ST. LEON'S CAVE
The deepest grotto in the Vosges, decorated with plaques in memory of Pope Saint Leo IX, the spring at the bottom is said to cure sterility
At 24 metres wide and 32 metres deep, it is the largest natural cavity in the Vosges mountains. The entrance is overlooked by a hundred-year-old oak tree. In his youth, Pope St. Leo IX often came to pray in this "stone cathedral". The trickle of clear water at the bottom of the GROTTE is said to have the miraculous virtue of curing sterility. On weekends in mid-December, the GROTTE SAINT-LÉON is transformed into a living nativity scene. Volunteers perform scenes from the Bible, complete with live animals.
